Job Summary and Responsibilities

Processes, embeds, sections, mounts, and routinely stains surgical and autopsy tissue and performs special stains. With other Histology team members, participates in the management of the Histology section.

 

As a Histotechnician, you will prepare human tissue for microscopic investigation and analysis by pathologists, including sectioning, treatment, slide placement, drying, and staining.

Daily, you will accurately perform accessioning and clerical functions, assist pathologists with tissue cutting and autopsies, and prepare slides with routine and special stains. You will maintain records, ensure proper chemical handling and tissue disposal, operate lab information systems securely, and deliver accurate, timely lab reports, plus other assigned duties.

Success in this role requires meticulous attention to detail in tissue preparation, strong lab safety and compliance knowledge, LIS proficiency, and a commitment to high-quality diagnostic support.

  • Processes and embeds all surgical and autopsy tissues and proficiently sections paraffin-embedded tissues, yielding professional quality. No more than 1-2 re-cuts per month as a result of improper techniques.
  • Embeds a minimum of 55-65 blocks per hour and sections a minimum of 25-35 blocks per hour.
  • Stains and mounts surgical and autopsy slides, performing special stains and immunohistological chemical procedures (if implemented) as requested, with no more than 2-4 requests for restrains per year.
  • Performs daily procedures and preventive maintenance on equipment including tissue processor, embedding center, strainer, and microtome knives, completing all tasks and documentation within established timeframes 95-99% of the time.
  • Trouble-shoots problems using all available resources and maintaining complete documentation.
  • Completes quality control and preventive maintenance records by target dates 94-97% of the time.

Job Requirements

 

  • Five (5) years experience in a histology laboratory that results in demonstrated proficiency in all phases of histologic technique.
  • Histotechnician (HT)
  • Work effectively under stress and adjust priorities as circumstances require. Maintain a high degree of accuracy. Treat co-workers, patients, visitors, and the public with dignity and respect. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all hospital personnel and medical staff. Maintain patient confidentiality. Problem-solve effectively. Work a flexible schedule and be willing to work additional hours if needed for the provision of quality patient care. 
  • Knowledge of: Skills in the preparation, embedding, cutting, and staining of tissue specimens, anatomic Pathology terminology and histology equipment, proper gross examination procedures.

  • Bachelors Of Science in Biological Sciences.
